Archaeology and architecture in North-West Sardinia

For archaeology lovers we recommend the prehistoric altar of Monte d'Accoddi (at km 222 of the Carlo Felice state road), a rare example of ziqqurat in the Mediterranean area, and the excavations of Turris Lybisonis, the current Porto Torres, which was, after Calaris, the most important city of Sardinia in Roman times.

Alghero is located in the extreme west coast of the territory of Nort-west of Sardinia: from here in about an hour you can reach many different places rich of history and archaeology. Going towards the south in the Carlo Felice road, you find the Meilogu land, with the renowned Nuraghi valley, the imposing palace of Santu Antine and the extraordinary domus de janas of Sant'Andrea Priu.

Sassari town is only half an hour far: it has a lovely medieval historic center and a Duomo with a very spectacular Baroque facade. The National Archeologic Museum G.A. Sanna is worth a visit.

Going further to the nord-est, Castelsardo and Osilo are worth a visit, with their castels and the Museo dell'Intreccio (Weave Museum). In the countryside of Anglona land (Nulvi, Bulzi, Laerru, Perfugas and most of all Martis), in the Carrucana area, the remains of ancient petrified forests dating back twenty million years ago are visible: outcrops of fossils resulting from slow silicification processes.
